The MacDonnell Ranges rise from the Central Australian desert like an ancient twisting serpent. They were formed through massive earth movements some 300 million years ago, breaking up what was then a sea bed as fossil remains testify. Being so old and weathered, they generally extend up only around 300 metres from the valley floor but are a sensational sight and more importantly, facilitate a number of permanent water holes and provide sanctuary to a large number of plant and animal species.
Winding along its ridges, waterholes, gorges and ancient rocks, the Larapinta Trail takes you into a landscape of incomparable beauty and power. LARAPINTA AND CULTURE is a supported, camping based expedition that seeks to explore this remarkable place, feel its power and touch its essence.
Interactions with the Arrente desert people, contemplative personal time and glorious daily walks along selected sections of the trail will allow you to absorb the desert beauty in a profound way. The itinerary below seeks to capture elements such as indigenous interactions, gentle stretching, meditation and interpretative guiding within the context of a medium supported walking journey. Please note that the itinerary may change due to weather or other factors.
The Big Fat Desert Walk is a joint program operated by Wayoutback Desert Safaris, Into the Blue Creative Walks and Jungala Enterprises, thus combining Central Australia's premier outback touring company with a specialist walking company and an indigenous cultural enterprise. The result is one of the world's great walking journeys trekking the powerful landscape of the LARAPINTA TRAIL.
Fitness and Training: The MacDonnell Ranges terrain is uneven with frequent ascents. Each day on the track involves between 4 - 8 hours walking. The adventure is graded moderate, requiring a good level of aerobic fitness. You will carry a simple day pack that includes water, jacket, lunch, camera, etc.
Camp Life: Our nights under the stars will be a highlight of the trip. Whilst the facilities are basic there will be a pit toilet and washing facilities. Sleeping will be in comfortable swags with mosquito-proof tents. All camping gear is supplied. You will be expected to share some tasks around the camp such as rolling your sleeping bag, etc.
Climate: Expect cool nights and warm, clear days. This is generally a magnificent time of the year in the Australian desert with everything that crawls soundly asleep and no or few flies.
