Wayoutback is a Carbon Neutral Business
Wayoutback has a long history of working to minimise the impact we have on our beautiful and delicate Central Australian desert environment. Global warming is something that affects us all and something we need to help address if we want to continue to run a sustainable and responsible business, not to mention a future for our kids.
Being involved with Outback Offsets, a joint pilot program established by Tourism NT (The Northern Territory Governments tourism agency) now concluded, saw Wayoutback achieve Carbon Neutrality in the 2008/09 year. We then voluntarily took up the challenge to become Carbon Neutral by the end of the 2009/10 Financial Year which we have achieved through offsetting the carbon emissions of each of our clients free of charge.
The money required to offset your emissions will go to LMS Generation Pty Ltd, an Australian Government approved Greenhouse Friendly™ abatement provider. The LMS abatement is from the Shoal Bay Landfill Gas Generation project in Darwin which produces electricity from methane gas harvested from waste.
Reducing our Diesel Consumption and Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions through Innovation
Being a tour business operating over large distances, diesel is by far the biggest contributer to our overall Company carbon emissions. However, in a Northern Territory first, Wayoutback has recently converted it's fleet of diesel vehicles from pure diesel to a combined diesel/LPG system called eCo-shot.
The LPG boost injection system is principally designed for turbo diesel combustion engines and involves adding an LPG tank to each vehicle which injects a mixture of air and gas into the chamber causing a hotter and more efficient burning of the diesel. This increases fuel economy, provides a cleaner burn thereby reducing diesel waste and GHG emissions as well as extending the life of the vehicle, reducing maintenance costs and overall fuel consumption.
As part of our Greenhouse Gas Life Cycle Assessment concluded in June 2009 by PE International, Wayoutback contributed 409 Tonnes of GHG emissions from our motor vehicles. It is anticipated that with the installation of the eCo-shot system we will initially realise a minimum reduction in overall emissions of 15% but this could be upwards of 30% once the system has been bedded in and fine tuned. This represents a major reduction in both GHG emissions and fuel consumption which can only be a good thing for the environment and our passengers who are concerned about the adverse affects of tourism.
We would like to make special mention of Tourism NT who without their vision and generous financial assistance, we would not have been able to undertake this initiative. Finding a way to markedly reduce our fuel consumption and GHG emissions has always been a stumbling block but thanks to the forward thinking of own State tourism body, we have an innovative solution.
