Make your Wayoutback Tour Carbon Neutral for Free!

Wayoutback has a long history of working to minimise the impact we have on our beautiful and delicate Central Australian desert environment. Global warming is something that affects us all and something we need to help address if we want to continue to run a sustainable and responsible business, not to mention a future for our kids.

Because of our own efforts to reduce our carbon emissions, and in recognition of our Advanced Eco Tourism status, Wayoutback is proud to be participating in Outback Offsets, a joint pilot program established by Tourism NT, The Northern Territory Governments tourism agency.

The aim of the Carbon Offset Pilot Project is to offset the carbon emissions of approximately 40% of the touring sector in Central Australia and is modelled on the Eurostar ‘Tread Lightly’ program.

The upshot is that when you travel with Wayoutback and when Booking any of our tours, you can elect to offset the carbon emissions for FREE !!

The money required to offset your emissions will go to LMS Generation Pty Ltd, an Australian Government approved Greenhouse Friendly™ abatement provider. The LMS abatement is from the Shoal Bay Landfill Gas Generation project in Darwin which produces electricity from methane gas harvested from waste.

What Wayoutback is doing to clean up its own back yard

Wayoutback Desert Safaris is an Advanced Eco Accredited tour operator with a continuing commitment to the environment. We have already taken the following pro-active measures to reduce our carbon footprint:

  • reducing cooling and heating emissions by installing a tropical roof in the office
  • replacing office PCs with laptops to reduce the carbon footprint
  • recycling office paper
  • reducing fuel usage by upgrading the vehicle fleet from 9 seat vehicles to 14 seats
  • reducing power usage by installing skylights in the operations/vehicle shed and therefore utilising natural light
  • using recycled materials in the building and maintenance of campsites where appropriate
  • re-vegetating campsites at regular intervals to minimise visitor impact on areas
  • reducing water usage by purchasing front loading washing machines for washing
  • using sunshine to dry sleeping bags instead of commercial dryers
  • reducing plastic bags & excess packaging by centralising food ordering and supply for tours
  • using non-plastic tour crockery – cups/plates etc
  • We use refillable cartridges for all our printers
  • reusing of discarded water containers as ice bricks instead of purchasing cooler blocks
  • We use old newspapers for cleaning vehicle windows
  • We recycle all our engine oil
  • All our late model vehicles comply with the most up-to-date emissions regulations
  • We encourage our staff to walk or cycle to work a few times a week
  • And last but not least the Boss, Don Wait, has committed at a personal level to cycling to work two days a week to reduce our daily operations vehicle carbon footprint – once his leg has mended itself. Other staff members are also walking or cycling to work to help make a difference.
