EcoTourism Australia

The definition of ecotourism adopted by Ecotourism Australia is:

"Ecotourism is ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation".

After many months under operational assessment, Wayoutback Desert Safaris have been awarded with the highest level of accreditation under the Eco Certification Program, 'Advanced Ecotourism Certification'.

Wayoutback Desert Safaris is the only Tour Operation located in the Red Centre (Alice Springs) visiting Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), Wattarrka (Kings Canyon), Palm Valley & the West MacDonnell regions with Advanced Eco-Tourism status level.

What is the Eco Certification Program?

The Eco Certification Program is a world first. It has been developed by industry for industry, addressing the need to identify genuine ecotourism and nature tourism operators in Australia. The Eco Certification Program is now being exported to the rest of the world as the International Ecotourism Standard.

What does it mean to the Consumer?

Ecotourism and nature tourism certification provide industry, protected area managers, local communities and travellers with an assurance that a certified product is backed by a commitment to best practice, ecological sustainability, natural area management and the provision of quality ecotourism experiences.

Where can I learn more about Eco-Tourism?

The Aboriginal people of the Western Desert region of Central Australia suffer rates of kidney failure up to 30 times the National average. When treated in urban centres, usually followed by their extended families, the prognosis for them and their family is grim. Being uprooted from their homelands, which they are profoundly connected to, kills the spirit.
A community based dialysis service has been set up out in their homelands so patients in need of treatment can do so in the place they were born with their family there to support them.
