The MacDonnell Ranges rise from the Central Australian desert like an ancient twisting serpent. They were formed through massive earth movements some 300 million years ago, breaking up what was then a sea bed as fossil remains testify. Being so old and weathered, they generally extend up only around 300 metres from the valley floor but are a sensational sight and more importantly, facilitate a number of permanent water holes and provide sanctuary to a large number of plant and animal species.

Winding along its ridges, waterholes, gorges and ancient rocks, the Larapinta Trail takes you into a landscape of incomparable beauty and power. THE BIG FAT DESERT WALK selects the most challenging and remote sections of the Larapinta Trail in an uninterrupted trek along Sections 3, 4 and 5. The journey is supported at 2 day intervals with replenishment of food and supplies.

Interactions with Arrente desert people, contemplative personal time, as well as the superb trek itself will allow you to absorb the desert beauty in a profound way. The itinerary below seeks to capture elements such as indigenous culture, daily stretching, contemplative personal time and interpretative guiding within the context of a medium/hard supported walking adventure.

The Big Fat Desert Walk is a joint program operated by Wayoutback Desert Safaris, Into the Blue Creative Walks and Jungala Enterprises, thus combining Central Australia's premier outback touring company with a specialist walking company and an indigenous cultural enterprise. The result is one of the world's great walking journeys trekking the powerful landscape of the LARAPINTA TRAIL.

Fitness and Training: The MacDonnell Ranges terrain is uneven with frequent ascents. Each day on the track involves between 4 - 8 hours walking. The adventure is graded moderate/hard, requiring a good level of aerobic fitness. Please contact Wayoutback Desert Safaris to discuss any fitness issues. Your packs will be between 12-14 kilos per person and food shall be restocked every second day.

Camp Life: Our nights under the stars will be a highlight of the trip. Whilst the facilities are basic there will be a pit toilet and washing facilities. Sleeping will be in comfortable swags with mosquito-proof tents. All camping gear is supplied. You will be expected to share some tasks around the camp such as rolling your sleeping bag, etc.

Climate: Expect cool nights and warm, clear days. This is generally a magnificent time of the year in the Australian desert with everything that crawls soundly asleep that you want to be asleep and no or few flies.

The Aboriginal people of the Western Desert region of Central Australia suffer rates of kidney failure up to 30 times the National average. When treated in urban centres, usually followed by their extended families, the prognosis for them and their family is grim. Being uprooted from their homelands, which they are profoundly connected to, kills the spirit.
A community based dialysis service has been set up out in their homelands so patients in need of treatment can do so in the place they were born with their family there to support them.
