This 7 Day Bird Watchers Safari takes in dynamic ecosystems from open Gibber flats and Spinifex Sandhill country to rock escarpments, River Red Gum country and remote permanent waterholes, all in pursuit of our winged friends.

Wayoutback Desert Safaris offer a truly authentic opportunity for the avid Bird watcher to lose themselves from the outside world whilst exploring some of the most beautiful and remote locations in Central Australia. During this time we visit two fantastic areas that are a beacon for some of the 160 species of birds that inhabit the region.

Special Features

  • Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Mount Wedge
  • West McDonnell Range country
  • Finke River / Ellery Creek system (the world’s oldest watercourse)
  • Boggy Hole water system

Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary

One of Central Australia’s best kept secrets is the Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary. Wholly owned by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, Newhaven is situated 360km’s north-west of Alice Springs. Measuring some 647,000 acres and containing 10 differing vegetation communities and landforms unique to any other reserve in Northern Australia.

Newhaven supports over 160 species of birds including the last reported sighting of the critically endangered Night Parrot.

Should our summer be generous with rain, Newhaven will flourish with species usually only seen on the Coastal Wetlands of this great country. Without generous rainfalls the arid land species are abundant as this is one of those rarely visited or interfered locations.

Finke River System and Boggy Hole

Central Australia contains only 8 permanent water hole systems of which Boggy Hole on the Finke River is the largest and most spectacular, albeit with the most difficult access. The rewards to those that visit this location with its rich early settler history are often indescribable.

Apart from its gob-smacking beauty, it is a veritable bird lovers feast, an “Ornithologists’ heaven”. Pack plenty of film or charge those batteries for this trip of a lifetime!

Your Chance to Really Experience the Outback as it Should Be

This is a true outback experience in a 4-wheel drive vehicle, small groups (max 9 persons), camping (tents can be provided), open fires at night, sensational camp fire meals with quality food, all equipment provided and fully catered. Camping and sleeping under the sensational star-filled southern night sky will be a memory of a life time. You, the wild and no other! On this tour you will be spending 2 nights accommodated in Alice Springs with 4 nights bush camping.

There is an old adage – “the best locations are the hardest to get to” and this is where Wayoutback’s name and tradition come from. People expect the best and we leave no stone unturned in achieving that.

As we so proudly boast

"Masses go Outback – Only the enlightened few go WAYOUTBACK"
