Iwantja Arts and Crafts
Iwantja Arts and Crafts is a working Aboriginal art and craft centre at Indulkana in the Anangu Ptijantjatjara Yangkunyjatjara Lands in the far north of South Australia. Only 8 km from the Stuart Highway between Alice Springs and Coober Pedy it is easily accessible for visitors.

Iwantja community gallery is an initiative to take the art centre further towards self-sustainability and to promote the art and craft of the Anangu people. With regular tour buses and visitors it offers a safe environment for art, training and employment in retail, business and tourism.

Anangu people have special ties to totemic sites in the area and paint their connection to it. Artists use symbolism from their own individual Dreaming path, single and concentric circles, animal tracks and straight and curved lines. The dots in different colour blocks represent vegetation as it changes from place to place and season to season. Each painting represents not only the site, but the event that took place there in the Dreaming. Sites may be specific rocks, water holes, special trees, mountains and many others, not only geological features, but places where bush foods can be gathered. Wavy lines may depict travels of these ancestral beings.
Contemporary art extends the boundaries of these traditions incorporating contemporary themes and bold colours.

Iwantja Art and Crafts is concentrating on diversifying and extending the art works and media produced, both as original works and designs for products manufactured by the art centre. The aim is to develop a moderate self-sustainable business for the future of the artists and the children to come.

Close to the Stuart Highway, Iwantja Arts offers the visitor a unique experience to see artists at work and purchase art directly from the artists’ community.
